A small space in a Tuscan province that no longer exists. Every time for me it's like being a child again, to the flavors and small attentions that have now been lost... A small space of the heart, not trendy, not cool, but true, authentic in the most complete sense of the term... I I love...

Luciano's is more of a takeaway than a restaurant, but a lucky few get the unique experience of eating at a table every day. Only a handful of seats are available. It is the oldest and longest-lived restaurant in Montevarchi, having been open since 1971. In over 40 years of management, Luciano, the founder, has transformed this restaurant into an iconic landmark for the town. Now, Stefania, his daughter, serves as the chef, having practically grown up behind the cooker under her father's careful guidance.
The spot, immaculately clean, has chosen not to adopt New York-style décor—à la Friends, to be precise—like most modern restaurants here in Tuscany. Instead, they chose to preserve the charm of tradition. In fact, the furnishings include heirlooms from eras before our own that hark back to an Italy that no longer exists. Surprising is the collection, enriched over the years, of wine or spirits bottles on display, the first examples of which date back to the 1950s.
The variety of dishes available is so vast that it often leaves one unsure of what to choose. It's all home cooking without a fuss of gourmet trappings. Here is a list of the house specialties.
# Rotisserie roast. Chicken, duck, quail, sausages, pork chops, roast bread. It's one of the dishes Luciano's is famous for. The restaurant is among the few that still prepares rotisserie roasts over a wood fire, a technique that imparts a unique flavor and texture to the meat. Luciano's chicken, in particular, is inimitable.
# Meatballs and meatrolls. You cannot pass by Luciano's without tasting them. The minced meatballs are particularly delicious, and the meatrolls, flavored with mortadella and sage, have a soft cheese heart inside.
# Rocchini. These are fried celery balls, and they are one of the traditional dishes of the town. In Montevarchi, they are prepared on the occasion of the town's festival in September. They are excellent on their own or served with meat sauce. They are not available all year around. The easiest time to find them is autumn, but Stefania occasionally prepares them outside the celery season.
# Roast duck prepared in the traditional porchetta style, also known as Anatra in porchetta. Stuffed with herbs and spices and flavored with a wild fennel gravy, the duck in porchetta is an unparalleled culinary experience to get into the local gastronomic mood. Note: The CH sound in Italian corresponds to the K sound in English, so the correct pronunciation is porKetta.
# Pasta Alfredo. Stefania, after participating in a culinary project related to Italian-American traditions, learned the recipe for this American sauce from the original Alfredo's formula in Rome that Hollywood actors liked so much that they brought it to the US. Stefania makes a cheese sauce that is very creamy and well flavored with pepper. It pairs well with fettuccine, spaghetti, and short pastas such as fusilli and penne, and it is so delicious that anyone who tries it is compelled to make a scarpetta (to mop it up) with bread.
Naturally, Luciano's offers a far more extensive menu than this, featuring both first courses and main courses. The menu also includes a variety of side dishes such as fried and roasted potatoes, beans, chickpeas, spinach, and seasonal vegetables. A dish of the day is often available. It is advisable, before choosing, to ask Stefania what special dish she has prepared, but it is still preferable to arrive at the counter with a clear idea. So much choice is confusing, and, in the end, one risks not knowing what to eat.
Avoid requesting appetizers (antipasto), as Luciano's is a cooking restaurant, not serving raw or cold dishes. There are no desserts, but the coffee is made with a stove-top moka pot, as in old osterias (taverns).
The prices are affordable, and the value-for-money of the dishes is unbeatable. You can't truly call your experience in Montevarchi complete without dining at Luciano's.
