the splendid panoramic position and for the great effort that has always been made to safeguard the many often forgotten monuments. These are the suggestive remains of an ancient medieval castle, I recommend you 💯🔝

Castel Grumello is a 13th century castle located in the municipality of Montagna in Valtellina. It is positioned on a hill (or "lump", a local term from which the name derives) in a strategic position, on a sheer slope that is difficult to reach by any enemies. It is a twin castle, consisting of two separate buildings, joined by a wall which has now almost completely disappeared. The castle was built by the De Piro family. An exponent of this family was the Ghibelline Corrado de' Piro, to whom the castle appears to have belonged. The building consisted of two buildings connected to each other: the west wing served as a residence, while the east wing had a military purpose. After becoming the property of the De Capitani (1372), the castle was destroyed in 1526 following the occupation of Valtellina by the Graubünden.[1] The destruction also involved the nearby castle of Mancapane, connected to Grumello via a tunnel. The tower and some ruins of the ancient Grumello castle survive. It is currently owned by the Italian Environment Fund which oversaw its recovery for cultural use.

Adda Vegia
