Sot aj Archi, the serene osteria that proudly displays the Bib Gourmand, the Michelin Guide's award given to establishments where you can eat well at a reasonable price, is located under the archway at Via Manconi 93, in the capital of the Marche region. Diners can choose from three bright, white-walled dining rooms, and if they venture into the restroom, located next to the kitchen, they'll feel the serenity that pervades the entire establishment. And there, my friend, one understands that everything served at the table will bear the mark of balance.
A small menu lists the kitchen's offerings, although the friendly waitress supplements the selection with dishes suggested based on what the local market has provided that day.
Since there were four of us and we wanted to try many things, we decided to share dishes and explore a good portion of the menu at this kitchen run by a woman. The only male waiter is a young Filipino who boasts of speaking multiple languages and who, as we discovered, demonstrates great skill when it comes to cleaning fish.
The first three starters were a prawn carpaccio with lemon notes, octopus with potatoes, and anchovies with a distinctly intense flavor.
We continued with gratinated mussels and a variety of razor clams which, perhaps due to their size or their time in the oven, were somewhat dry.
We soared again with the seafood pasta and the red mullet. Both dishes were splendid. The pasta was perfectly al dente; the fish, expressive, delicate, and full of nuances.
To finish, a whiting soup. The fish was a good size, and the seafood broth was flavorful and comforting.
The traditional unsalted bread of the region was noteworthy, designed to accompany the food without overpowering it.
The wine list is interesting and very reasonably priced. We opted for two high-quality wines from the local producers. On the one hand, a Verdicchio from old vines by one of the region's most renowned wineries, Umani Ronchi. Flavorful, characterful, and with a long finish. An exemplary Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi that behaves magnificently in the glass, although in this case it's a shame the glassware is a bit too small to fully appreciate its character.
The second offering was another Verdicchio, this time from Matelica: the 2022 Vigneto Fogliano from Bisci. Also excellent, perhaps more subtle, more refined, and with a more elegant profile.
The service is very attentive to the diners, and the kitchen staff takes the time to greet and chat on a couple of occasions.
A charming space and a deeply local menu, based on popular but honest cuisine. Excellent quality ingredients and execution that avoids unnecessary artifice.
More than reasonable prices. An interesting place that deserves attention and a visit. These are the kinds of places that, without fanfare, remind us that good cooking usually consists of respecting the product, understanding tradition, and serving both intelligently.

Excellent fresh fish; it's clear the owners pay close attention to the quality of their ingredients. Considering this, the value for money is excellent. Traditional, high-quality cuisine. There are just two small flaws: the octopus with potatoes was a bit salty, and I would pay more attention to deboning the catch of the day.
A must-visit if you visit Ancona, we'll definitely be back!

Ristorante Sot'Ajarchi is one of the most well-known seafood restaurants in Ancona, located near the historic fish market. The restaurant is especially appreciated for the quality of its catch and its traditional yet refined Marche cuisine. It has received major awards. The price is reasonable for the service.
Very friendly staff. Highly recommended.

A very positive experience. There were seven of us eating, the waiter was very professional and made us feel comfortable without being intrusive. The fish was truly exceptional, and the wine cellar was excellent. The price was fair for the quality and the hospitality. I come to Ancona for work once a month, and I highly recommend it.

The food is excellent, with beautifully presented dishes and attention to detail. The atmosphere is clean and pleasant. The only downside is the price, which is slightly high for the type of dish offered. For a restaurant of this caliber, one would also expect better quality bread and better coffee, but they are, in fact, average.
