09/12/2023: Rosas mine (Narcao) is the second oldest mining concession in Sardinia. In ancient times the whole area was affected by mining by the Romans and then by Pisa. The Rosas mine was granted in 1851 for the exploitation of galena to the Società Anonima dell'Unione Miniere Sulcis e Sarrabus. In 1900 the mining concession was extended to zinc and copper ores. In 1930 the mining ownership passed to the Società Anonima Miniere di Rosas which also purchased the nearby concessions of Mitza Sermentus and Truba Niedda (Bega Trotta) in 1933. Mining continued until the early 1960s with the AMMI SpA company and ceased in 1979 until the definitive disavowal of the subsidy in 1984. In the Rosas mine in 1908, for the first time in the world it was discovered by prof. Domenico Lovisato rosasite, a carbonate of zinc and copper with a hydroxyl group. Rosasite takes its name from the Rosas mine; it is an identifying mineral defined as the type species of Sardinia.
