Service was attentive. Food (people come here for steak) was decent. Maybe skip their desserts; we tried two and they were forgettable

This restaurant is just steps from Santa Maria Novella train station. The food is excellent and plentiful, and the waiters are friendly and always available. Highly recommended.

La Trattoria Il Portale si trova molto vicino alla stazione di Santa Maria Novella. Abbiamo mangiato lì un giorno perché era vicino al nostro hotel, l'Hotel Embassy. Si tratta di un ristorante molto carino, con una bella decorazione e molto elegante. Il menu è abbastanza completo e hanno tutti i tipi di pasta e pizza, oltre a vari piatti di carne e pesce. Il cibo era molto gustoso e molto ben presentato. Le porzioni non erano molto abbondanti. Il prezzo non era male, anche se un po' più costoso rispetto agli altri ristoranti della zona. L'attenzione è stata buona.

First of all, the staff were very kind from the moment I entered... It was the first time I felt Up10tion hospitality since coming to Italy When you first go, they ask you your nationality, and if you say you're Korean, they'll give you a Korean menu! The T-bone steak was the best without a doubt👍 Order the white beef ㅎㅎ I made a reservation through the The Fork app and got a 20% discount, so I ate at a very cheap price! Be sure to make a reservation ㅎㅎ

The food is tasteless. The service and atmosphere are great. The salad was tasteless, the steak too (the steak was not cooked on the fire, in my opinion). The waiters are great, they are pulling the situation out as best they can. Something needs to be done with the kitchen.

locale molto accogliente con servizio rapido e gentilissimo. Trattandosi di una catena temevamo un’offerta piatta, invece ottimo pici, ottima la guancia e i crostini. Eccellente carta dei vini. Prezzi giusti.

10/07/2025: I had dinner at this restaurant, but only after making a reservation. Even though I was alone, I'd tried several times, but without a reservation, it was always packed. This historic restaurant has two rooms: one with the bar and a few tables, and then a second, larger and more spacious room. The place is clean, as is the small bathroom. The artwork hanging on the walls is also beautiful, with a QR code to find out the artist and price. The staff is always friendly, even when they had to tell me there was no room. They even explained why the ribollita soup, which I'd so much wanted, was missing from the menu: it simply wasn't in season for some ingredients, like cavolo nero. On the other hand, it was tomato season, and therefore the delicious pappa al pomodoro they recommended. I would have had a second course instead of dessert, but after the meat, I was full. The fillet steak was cooked perfectly, rare but not cold all over. The Florentine steak at the adjacent tables was beautiful, but it would have been too much for me on its own. I highly recommend it! It's truly one of the few trattorias that doesn't have a touristy feel. I still recommend booking.

Trattoria La Gargotta

09/07/2025: It's been a while since we've been back to Gargotta, and I think it's changed management. In any case, we ate very well. Excellent steak, excellent tartare, even fried flowers, and amazing desserts. The appetizer platter was perhaps a bit ordinary, and they could use a makeover. Excellent selection of wines and Prosecco. The terrace is perfect for summer evenings, with the background music of frogs that reminds us of the countryside. Discreet and informal service.
08/07/2025: Trattoria La Gargotta is a superb restaurant. I went there for dinner with four friends. We ate everything, a classic Tuscan/Florentine menu: classic Tuscan appetizer, first course (tagliolini with truffle), second course (grilled rosticciana), with side dishes (sautéed spinach and baked potatoes), and coffee. Everything was VERY GOOD. From start to finish. The service was a bit awkward; they confused the bottle we ordered with a more expensive one. The owner, having already opened it for us, apologized and offered it to us at the same price as the one we ordered. Truly very kind. (Not everyone would do that these days.) The restaurant is located in the Florentine hills, just outside the city, with a splendid terrace overlooking the city, and a very beautiful and characteristic interior. I highly recommend coming for dinner.
