Immersed in a historical context of unusual charm, Gli Scacchi is located in a building that is most likely contemporary with the Royal Palace, in the adjacent area that at that time constituted the productive urban nucleus built on the edge of the Bourbon residence to ensure its self-sufficiency. Once you cross the threshold, you are greeted by a sober elegance: the light-colored plaster enhances the warm colors of the furnishings, while the exposed brickwork with a rustic character marries perfectly with the refined table linen and the light gilding of the furnishings. The lighting, distinct and clean, creates an intimate atmosphere without ever being invasive. For two, we enjoyed L'Orto (€16.50), a good appetizer in three courses; Mezzi paccheri di gragnano with cod, yellow cherry tomatoes from Veduvio, black olives from Caiazzano, raisins, pine nuts and capers (€15), exceptional; Steamed cod mussel on pepper cream and crusco pepper powder (€20), excellent; house dessert (€7), very good. All accompanied by an excellent Falanghina (€24). The owner, prepared and attentive, moves gracefully between the tables, demonstrating care for every need without ever exceeding the measure of discretion. In the kitchen, the chef reveals a deep knowledge of raw materials and a talent for reinventing traditional recipes or proposing modern creations with surprising taste. The result was a truly memorable evening, in which history, attention to detail and refined flavors merged into an excellent experience.

While traveling through Italy with my mother and son, we stumbled upon Gli Scacchi quite by accident after visiting the nearby palace — and what an unforgettable surprise it turned out to be! Out of our entire three-week journey through Italy, this was hands down the most extraordinary meal we had. Every appetizer we tried was exquisite — so much so that after each first bite, we’d look at one another, smiling and murmuring variations of “wow.” The flavors were thoughtful, fresh, and beautifully presented. For dessert, we simply couldn’t choose… so we didn’t! We ordered three to share and added a fourth just to be safe. Each one was divine. What amazed us most was how quiet the restaurant was that afternoon. Somehow, we had the place to ourselves, which made it feel like a secret treasure. Everyone else must’ve been eating elsewhere — and truly missing out. Gli Scacchi is a rare find, and one I’ll be recommending to anyone heading anywhere near the area.
