Pub Skala, which only goes by the name of a pub, is actually an authentic Slovenian tavern hidden in the small village of Gropada, on the border between Italy and Slovenia. The streets here are so narrow that you can barely get through with a small car, and it really feels like you're in the middle of nowhere. Yet, this place offers a unique experience. Here you can find good German beer, which is rare in the area, and at more than fair prices. Finally you can enjoy real original German Hell and Bock! But it's not just the beer that makes the difference: the cuisine offers traditional dishes such as jota, a dish loved in these parts, which ranges from Istria to the Slovenian Karst up to Trieste. A tip not to be underestimated: add 4-5 tablespoons of Cabernet to your jota and drink the rest of the bottle. I guarantee that that day will remain etched in your memory. The shank with polenta is a real delight, as is the sandwich with hamburger, ham and mushrooms. And to end on a high note, the palačinke with white chocolate and strawberries are the perfect ending. If wine and beer haven't already made your eyelids droop, these will definitely send you into a sweet stupor.

Excellent beers and cheeses, really tasty, but the rest is anonymous. Clarification due: I tried various cured meats and the famous fried palacinke which didn't impress us. I went back and will go again, perhaps to taste the cuisine and update this review.

I was born in Gropada and it is a very beautiful and peaceful place!

I came across it at the suggestion of my daughter and her boyfriend, unfortunately it is not on a thoroughfare. Ate very well, they have a "scary" dessert list with a dedicated menu, as well as being world record holders for the number of palacinke flavours. I will definitely be back!
