On the morning of September 11, 2001, 19 al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four passenger planes: 1. Two planes, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. The first tower (the North Tower) was hit at 8:46 a.m. The second tower (the South Tower) was hit at 9:03 a.m. Both towers had collapsed by 10:30 a.m. 2. A third plane, American Airlines Flight 77, crashed into the Pentagon, the headquarters of the Department of Defense, near Washington, D.C. 3. The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, did not reach its target (possibly the Capitol or the White House) thanks to the heroic actions of its passengers. It crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. Aftermath Nearly 3,000 people died (2,977 victims plus 19 hijackers). Tens of thousands were injured or indirectly affected by disaster-related illnesses (such as respiratory illnesses among rescue workers). The United States responded with the so-called "War on Terror," which led to the invasion of Afghanistan in October 2001 and then to the Iraq War in 2003.
