The best dinner we’ve had in Florence, or any city, at this price point in some time. A contemporary take on Tuscany-inspired menu. Risotto with mantua pumpkin and grilled gnocchi with sautéed mushrooms were both excellent; service also excellent; a broad wine list to suit all budgets. Located in Sant’ Ambogio, which seems much less touristy and more neighborhoody; better food and better value than a few restaurants we visited closer to the Duomo centre.

L’Ortone has the menu, aesthetic, and service of an eatery more than deserving of its critical (Michelin) credentials. Unfortunately, the execution of its offerings undermines that reputation.
The first item you’re given at L’Ortone is taken from a visible stockpile adjacent to the cash register and cutlery station. This, of course, is the dreaded basket of stale, oiled-up bread—one can only wonder how long this ominous delight had been sitting there, gathering dust.
As an appetiser, I had an exceptional amberjack carpaccio—astonishingly fresh, with fragrant hints of juniper. My partner had an equally impressive dish consisting of standard Tuscan fare: cold cuts and warm bread.
My pasta course sounded delightful: fresh tortelloni filled with whipped cod, finished with a parmesan espuma, topped with roe, and drizzled with parsley oil. Simple, refined, tasty.
Or it would have been, had the kitchen bothered to cook the pasta for more than a minute. I didn’t think it was possible to achieve stale fresh pasta, but the team managed to commit the highest form of Italian blasphemy there is.
After this, my culinary journey at L’Ortone arrived at a surprisingly more solemn destination: the chickpea mille-feuille.
If that’s what you call a precarious, under-seasoned spire of miscellaneous carbohydrate resembling a boiled potato, then the staff nailed it. This was topped with an incongruent garnish of sun-dried tomato and olive “dust.”
I’d hazard a guess that the inspiration behind these additions was sheer panic—blindly fulfilling the tick-box requirement for the obligatory vegetarian course.
As a side note, the tables at L’Ortone are extremely tight and close together, creating atmosphere but eliminating the ability to hold a cogent conversation.

We loved our server Denise, and the ambiance of the restaurant is great. However we ordered a steak that we regret getting. Cooked well, but very hard to cut and enjoy without a ton of effort. Pasta and apps were fine. Would not send friends or family to here when they visit

In a now-revived Sant'Ambrogio, this place stands out for its authentic Florentine tagliata...very tender and rare! The appetizer and first course are good. Prices are in line with those of central Florence. Oh my God, we ate at a table as big as a barrel and on the sidewalk...but this time I'll let it pass...I'll see next time.

A very traditional and welcoming restaurant with a certain historic character. Excellent food with attentive yet informal service. The dishes are meticulously crafted and very flavorful. We'll definitely be returning.

We went for lunch, not particularly hungry, but curious to try this Michelin-starred trattoria. We had an appetizer: fried tongue with caramelized onions, divine and delicious.
Main course: braised cheek with mashed potatoes, fabulous, it melted in your mouth and there was absolutely no need for a knife.
Dessert: Vivoli ice cream accompanied by coffee, excellent.
Overall, a wonderful experience, a beautiful place, and very friendly staff. We'll definitely be back. The price was perfectly reasonable.
