HISTORY AND ARCHITECTURE INSIGHTS: The café overlooks the square, offering outdoor seating that allows you to fully enjoy the intimate and cozy atmosphere of this corner of the city. FUN FACT: DID YOU KNOW THAT...? Piazza Mattei is a small but beautiful square in Rione XI (Sant'Angelo), near the Ghetto. It can be considered one of the most beautiful squares in Rome, each one like a postcard, each with its own splendid features. This square is overlooked by grand 15th- and 16th-century palaces belonging to the noble Roman family of Mattei and Costaguti, which mark its boundaries and, along with other buildings, formed the so-called "Isola Mattei." A special mention goes to the evocative Turtle Fountain, designed by Giacomo della Porta (1533-1602) and built between 1581 and 1588. A recent restoration has restored its elegant charm. A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE: After a stroll through places that tell stories, through historic buildings, squares, and impressive fountains, evidence of a virtuous urban stratification, I stopped for a delicious breakfast here.
