A top restaurant in the immediate vicinity of the Vatican. A small number of tables are available outside. There's a large indoor area in the air-conditioned basement.
As a precaution, we made a reservation well in advance for a larger group via email, received immediate confirmation, and even though there were a few months between our reservation and our visit, everything went smoothly.
The team is so incredibly friendly that our children were eager to eat there again. One child was treated to a glass of apple juice to toast with the adults, and another was given several spoonfuls of different desserts to sample.
The selection and quality of the food is excellent and, in our experience, stands out even among the generally high standards in Rome!
As mentioned in other reviews, gluten-free and lactose-free dishes are available.
We are still absolutely thrilled and highly recommend a visit!

We would highly recommend La Soffitta to anyone, but especially anyone looking for gluten free options in Rome! I am not gluten free, but was traveling with someone who was, so I can attest that both their regular pasta/pizza and their gluten free options were equally incredible. The service was also lovely, with the waiters going out of their way to let us try gluten free Tiramisu. We went back twice in a four day trip - an absolute must try!

Our tour guide recommended La Soffitta while we toured St. Peter’s Basilica and it ended up being one of the most memorable meals of our entire trip. From the moment we sat down, the atmosphere felt authentically Roman. Warm, charming, relaxed, and quietly elegant without trying too hard. Exactly the kind of place travelers hope to find and locals probably try to keep secret.
Every dish was exceptional. The prosciutto with melon was impossibly fresh and delicate. The warm focaccia arrived puffed and blistered from the oven, with that perfect balance of crisp exterior and airy center that makes you stop talking for a moment just to appreciate it. The risotto was creamy and comforting without feeling heavy, and the seafood pasta tasted like it had come straight from the Mediterranean that afternoon — fresh shrimp, clams, mussels, and calamari with perfectly cooked homemade pasta. The bright flavors somehow felt both refined and effortless.
And then there was the cheesecake. One of the best desserts we’ve had anywhere. Rich, silky, and decadent without being overly sweet.
But what truly elevated the evening was the feeling of hospitality. Nothing felt rushed. The staff made us feel welcomed instead of processed, which can be hard to find in a major tourist city. It was romantic, peaceful, and deeply satisfying. This was the kind of dinner that’ll be part of our memory of Rome itself.
If you are visiting Rome and want a meal that feels authentic, heartfelt, and absolutely delicious, La Soffitta is a must.

I spontaneously decided to have lunch there while passing by. I had a Suppli and an Amatriciana. Both were delicious.
Highly recommended.
