La Focagna In Matera

Evening in Matera ended in this place with a non-touristy dinner, but with the desire to taste typical dishes. The place is not large, but rustic and a little narrow. The dishes on the other hand were very good. Tasted the cruschi peppers: true goodness; broad beans and chicory and crapiata: a typical legume soup. He also took two pizzas, which given that they were not Neapolitan obviously, were not deserving, especially the one with walnuts and honey: very particular. Good dinner, will come back.

We had lunch here after it was recommended to us. The service and dishes were excellent but above all very rich. Affordable price and excellent location given that it is practically located in the rocks. Super recommended!

A very beautiful and characteristic tavern in Matera stone, our table was literally an old well through which you could see the contents! The atmosphere is very nice, the menu is not very rich (few things but local) like the wines. The dishes are normal, perhaps a little touristy but quite pleasant.

La Focagna deserves special mention for its pizza, specifically its pizza crust. I’ve been around a bit, and have developed the heretical opinion that the best pizza in the world is found not in Italy but in southern Brazil. This is because in Italy the crust is typically so thin and the tomato sauce so watery that the center of the pizza becomes soggy and goopy and you have to eat it with a knife and fork; you can’t just pick up a slice by hand and eat it. After visiting every region of Italy including both major islands, this is the only time I can remember getting a pizza where the crust is what I’d call right: it’s thick enough and stays crispy enough that you can actually pick it up and eat it without utensils. I couldn’t decide between the regular sausage or the spicy Calabrian sausage, so they did a half and half for me. If you have the same dilemma, ask them to do the same ;-)

Nothing to say about the food, which is typical and tasteful, while as regards the service, it pains me to have to tell you about my not particularly pleasant experience: despite the fact that, right from the entrance, there is a "Free Wifi" sign, if you ask one of the waitresses I was told that "you only come here to eat" in a very annoyed manner.

The atmosphere and food were fantastic. If your table is upstairs, please take some time to go downstairs and see the rest of the place. Recommended

We went to this place on the evening of December 29th and had a great time. The staff is professional and friendly, the place is welcoming and the dishes are excellent and at fair prices.

We had lunch in this place and had a good time, the pizzas taken by the boys were good, also the appetizer with a platter of cold cuts and soup, my husband and I ate the meat with rocket and cherry tomatoes, very good and cooked as requested! The place is clean and quaint..the only flaw is that the dishes were chipped and the staff were friendly. Excellent value for money too! I recommend it

Ottime pietanze della tradizione Lucana, personale premuroso e cordiale. Locale caratteristico. Consigliato! Da non perdere se vi trovate a Matera!

Mi sono imbattuto in questo posto per caso e devo dire che fortuna. Avevo voglia di pizza e qui la pizza é ottima come anche tutto il resto. Location veramente da ammirare in tema con il nome del locale. Tutto ottimo l'unica "pecca" é che non fanno il caffé (capisco tutto ma in italia il caffé é un must have). Per il resto da provare assolutamente anche perché i prezzi applicati sono ottimi e la qualità é molto alta.
