Beautiful square in the historic center of Pistoia...intimately gathered in the space where, in the Lombard era, the curtis domini regis (Gastaldo's palace) was located, the Piazza della Sala, clustered around the Pozzo del Leoncino, today hosts a weekly market....the area, characterized by small shops, stone stalls and roofs, was once the site of a daily food market....in 1529, a small lion - which later gave the fountain its name - was placed above the architrave of the sandstone fountain, with the left paw above the coat of arms of the city, to symbolize the definitive control of Florence over Pistoia....the construction of a new palace on the south side in 1564 led to the demolition of some shops, while the remaining space was reserved for vegetable vendors....slowly, the fixed stalls gave way to brick stalls, partly damaged during the war, and a reinforced concrete structure to be used as a covered square....since 1996, the group of bronze sculptures Giro del sole, by the artist Roberto Barni, has made its place in the square with the plaque "Piazza degli verde"...
