The café is located right in the heart of the old town and is frequented by locals, visitors to the castle, and cruise ship passengers. The service team handles everything calmly and very friendly. The croissants are delicious, as are the prune pastries and other homemade sweets. The cappuccino is perfect, as is the Red Aurora No. 8 fruit tea, both of which we received after a few days completely unprompted. We went there almost every day and enjoyed the southern Italian atmosphere.

There are places where time seems to flow differently, and La Caffetteria del Castello dal 1890 is one of them. Located right beside the ancient walls of the Norman-Swabian castle, this charming café preserves the authentic charm of historic Bari, where the aroma of freshly ground coffee blends with the scent of the sea and the soft buzz of narrow streets. La Caffetteria del Castello dal 1890 – Coffee with history in the heart of Bari is the natural continuation of this atmosphere.
A story of taste and tradition. Founded in 1890, La Caffetteria del Castello is more than just a stop for coffee – it is part of the city’s identity. The warm atmosphere, vintage touches, and impeccable service make you think of times when the rhythm of life was measured in espresso cups and sincere smiles.
Here, coffee is treated with the respect it deserves: creamy, intense, well-balanced. The espresso is dense and velvety, while the cappuccino has that perfect foam that makes you want to enjoy it slowly, almost as a ritual.
An Italian breakfast done right. In the morning, the caffetteria fills with locals – a sign of true authenticity. Filled cornetti with cream, chocolate, or apricot jam, artisanal biscuits, traditional pastries, and fresh red orange juice are the ideal choices for a bright start to the day.
If you’re lucky, you can even catch a pasticciotto leccese – a typical Puglian dessert with smooth vanilla cream that melts in your mouth.
We chose to try the Piatto Breakfast, a simple yet flavorful start to the day – a well-balanced mix of freshness and taste. Creamy cheese, perfectly cooked egg, and fine cold cuts come together beautifully with sweet cherry tomatoes and tender lamb’s lettuce. Fresh bread completes the plate, perfect for gathering all the flavors into a generous and appetizing Italian-style breakfast.
A fan favorite was the Crostone with egg, avocado, and salmon – an irresistible combination of fresh textures and flavors. Crunchy bread supports a creamy layer of avocado, topped with delicately smoked salmon and an egg cooked just right. Poppy seeds add a subtle crunch, while cherry tomatoes and lamb’s lettuce bring brightness and color. A modern breakfast, balanced and full of energy – perfect for starting the day with a smile.
A stop with a historical view. The terrace, overlooking the castle walls, is the perfect place for a break after strolling through Bari Vecchia. From here you can watch people go by, feel the city’s pulse, and, for a few moments, be swept away by that unmistakable Italian feeling – dolce far niente.
What else is worth trying?
At La Caffetteria del Castello dal 1890 in Bari, the croissants are a true love letter to the Italian breakfast. Whether you choose the pistacchio version – rich and velvety with the unmistakable aroma of pistachio – the fragola version, sweet and fruity with the freshness of strawberries, the cioccolato with intense and decadent chocolate, or the mango version, delicately exotic and refreshing, each croissant wins you over in its own way. Soft, fine, and perfectly balanced, these croissants prove that in Bari even mornings taste like dolce vita…
The pasticciotto from La Caffetteria del Castello dal 1890 is a sweet Puglian gem, baked to perfection. Its golden, delicate crust hides a smooth vanilla cream that melts in your mouth, leaving behind a warm, velvety, slightly nostalgic taste. Simple, authentic, and incredibly delicious, pasticciotto is the kind of dessert that puts a smile on your face and makes you understand why in Bari every morning begins with a small but perfect pleasure.
La Caffetteria del Castello dal 1890 is where history is served alongside a perfect coffee. A small space, full of soul, where every aroma tells a story, and every stop becomes a memory.
If you reach Bari and want to feel the authentic taste of the city, stop here. Savor, observe, and live the moment.
