It was a late April evening, one of those when spring lingered in the air like a light caress and summer seemed only a distant promise. My partner, a karate instructor, and I arrived at the pizzeria later than the others. Our athletes had already eaten dinner and were leaving amidst quick greetings, restrained smiles, and that silent tension that always preceded a competition. The next day, the National Karate Cup awaited us in Pescara. We had traveled three hundred and fifty kilometers to reach Montesilvano, and we were feeling tired, but our minds remained light. When the journey reached a beloved destination, the weight seemed to melt away on its own. We entered with the noise of the highway still in our thoughts. The place was bustling with life: couples deep in conversation, friends alight with sudden bursts of laughter, a noisy graduation party in one corner. Everything had that simple beauty of ordinary things when they happen at the right time. We sat down. Warm bread and local extra virgin olive oil arrived immediately, intense and lively, with the flavor of the true earth. We ordered two pinsas and two cold beers. Excellent, fragrant, light. The dinner had the precise taste of respite. But the real spectacle wasn't in the dishes. It was her. A waitress. At first, she was just a presence, crossing the room and shifting her gaze without asking. Then I began to really observe her. The way she avoided a misplaced chair, how she moved between the tables without bumping into anyone, how she carried the plates without ever breaking rhythm. She didn't walk. She slipped. She seemed not to touch the ground, as if the floor had no power to hold her. She immediately reminded me of Beriozka, the Russian dance of suspended ballerinas, those figures that advanced as if floating, leaving no weight on the ground. That's how she was: a Beriozka among the tables of an Abruzzo pizzeria. I looked at her with that silent curiosity that arises only when faced with something truly surprising. Finally, more out of wonder than courage, I told her. I told her she looked like a dancer, that her way of moving had something hypnotic. She stopped. She looked at me with amazement and a slight annoyance. “No,” she replied. “I don't like dancing. I box. Since I was little.” Boxing. Not lightness, but punches. Not music, but discipline. And it was there that everything became even more beautiful. I suddenly understood that that grace wasn't born of delicacy, but of strength. From absolute control of the body. Like in karate, like in boxing: the most elegant gesture always comes from the hardest training. She wasn't a dancer. She was a fighter. And perhaps that's precisely why she seemed to be dancing. We also had a tiramisu and two coffees, but the flavor that lingered wasn't that of the dessert. It was that revelation. We left that pizzeria feeling like we'd witnessed a dinner show, an unconscious choreography, a dance without music or a stage. We, accustomed to the silent language of karate, knew it well: the body always spoke the truth that words try to hide. She said that dance didn't belong to her. And yet, among the tables, she continued to dance.
