I want to give an honest review of my experience at Galactus Tiburtina. For those who don't want to read the whole thing, I'll summarize: I'll start by saying that I was only half satisfied, which is why I didn't give it the highest rating. My opinions are subjective, and the experience is about appraising MTG cards. My advice on the subject is: if you want a voucher to get something from a well-stocked store, yes. If you want to maximize your profit, I'd say no.
So, first of all, the store is beautiful and well-stocked. I also like its internal layout and its fairly busy nature. They're also very organized; in fact, they have a dedicated card appraisal table with a dedicated staff member. The atmosphere is informal but not tacky, which is a good thing.
Let's get to the things I liked:
- the woman who appraised my cards was very kind and courteous, trying to be clear about the various steps and explaining how the voucher process works; I also thought it was clever that she discussed a card of a certain value with a colleague, the most valuable one in the lot, about which she might not have been sure;
- some of the cards' valuations weren't too far from what I'd listed on mkm, and I accepted them.
Let's look at the things I didn't like:
- the valuations of some cards were much lower than I expected, which I don't blame on the valuations themselves, but rather on the shop's policy. However, this makes me think that my valuations on the cards I accepted weren't particularly high by default (e.g., a card I valued at 9 was valued at 6, which I consider acceptable, but given that other cards I valued higher were valued proportionately lower, I wonder if that 9 wasn't already low);
- most of the cards were NOT valued/taken, and this made me a bit disappointed. Not that I expected to sell them at full price (for me, an acceptable valuation was about 50% of my valuation), but seeing me listed in bulk for €1 or €2 cards was disappointing. I'm not saying I should value them at €1 each, but at least 20 cents, so I could accumulate a little extra credit without stealing anything, considering it was good and not cash.
- The colleague the girl asked for valuation advice made a comment that I found unkind: "I almost wouldn't take it." I should point out that this is a valuable card, but it's not the easiest to sell individually, so in the end, the valuation offered to me was less than half its value. The amount itself wasn't a problem, but adding that valuation to the "I almost wouldn't take it" statement seemed like an attempt to make it seem like he was doing me a favor by taking it, in order to get me to accept the valuation. I'd rather be told, "We're offering this valuation because we think it's played" (the card is at least good) than to be told, "I almost wouldn't take it," as if it were worthless :(
All things considered, I accepted the valuation for some cards, and not for others, but I'm halfway satisfied, especially with the "bulk" ones, because many of those cards weren't bulk-worthy in my opinion. In the end, I think (or hope) I got about 45-50% of the total value of the cards I bought.
In any case, I absolutely recommend the store for anyone looking for comics, manga, and fixed-price publishing because they have a great selection (for example, they had many pieces from the DC Pocket Collection, a line I'm following). As for the valuations, no: those who bring cards to the store don't expect to get 100% of their value, but some valuations seemed too low to me. I haven't purchased anything, so I can't judge the selling prices.
I'll definitely go back to spend the voucher, then we'll see for other occasions, since it's quite far from where I live.
