For most people the attraction of the Basilica di San Francesco boils down to one things: the fresco by Piero della Francesca. And to be fair it is an astonishing piece of work even if it does give you neck ache. His rendering of the History of the True Cross is vivid and alive in a remarkable way.
Still the church does offer a few more attractions with other frescoes and creations scattered about. There's plenty of space and quite a lot to enjoy if you like Renaissance religious buildings. I can imagine that it gets busy in the holidays but out of season it was a delight.

Beautiful basilica, it would need an audiovisual system with a tablet that accompanies you, today you get a ridiculous 70s audio system for 5 euros

Beautiful church, but the ticket price is very exaggerated.

While it's probably more convenient to view the paintings in an art history book, seeing the work in person is even better, as you can better appreciate how it fits into the church space.

Great building, but there are many other buildings that are just as great that don't cost anything to enter. I don't think it's worth paying for a ticket to go inside.

One of the splendid churches that the city of Arezzo offers its visitors. Extremely beautiful, it is made even more captivating by the fresco cycle depicting the history of the Cross by Piero della Francesca. Words cannot describe this spectacle. It simply needs to be contemplated.

While touring Arezzo, we purchased a combined ticket for a tour of four museums. The Basilica is one of them. Inside, behind the altar, is a chapel containing several masterpieces by Piero della Francesca. You can stay in this chapel for thirty minutes, while there is no time limit for the rest of the church. What personally struck me most, however, were the stained glass windows, truly mesmerizing.

A very beautiful and imposing Basilica (externally) because unfortunately I found it closed! I went to visit Arezzo on January 1st, but considering it was a public holiday I thought it was open because many other attractions were open and considered "extraordinary openings". It would have been nice... inside there is the famous Crucifix by Cimabue. Sin. Otherwise my rating would have gladly been 5 stars. But considering the day of celebration and considering the amount of people present and considering the fact that everything else was open precisely to give everyone the opportunity to visit the different places, I can't give it more than 3 because it was truly the only place closed to the public.

I traveled to Italy to see Piero della Francesca's frescoes in the Church of St. Francis in Arezzo. In early September, there are no lines or crowds, so you can take your time viewing everything. The paintings fill three walls with the legend of the True Cross, from the planting of the tree under the tongue of the dead Adam, through the history unfolding until the 7th century AD. Adam's scene is high up, in a lunette, difficult to see; more has to be guessed. It's impressive when you make the effort. The most beautiful scenes are the two central sections of the two opposite walls: the Queen of Sheba arriving at King Solomon's and Saint Helena's search for and finding the Cross. Full of majesty and delicacy. It's worth seeing for yourself, step by step, and finding your favorite episodes. A masterpiece.
