02/04/2024: The church where Bernini and Borromini - even if not by their will - meet through their works. Oh yes, because one was responsible for the completion of some parts of the basilica (unfortunately the dome remained unfinished following his death and the works were finished by De Rossi) and the other was responsible for the two splendid marble angels that were destined to Ponte S. Angelo but which the Pope considered too beautiful to be exhibited and asked to keep indoors (and which the heirs donated to the church). Mentioned in 12th century documents as S. Andrea infra hortos (hence the "delle fratte"), it was rebuilt on the orders of Sixtus V starting from 1585. Borromini built the bell tower in the 17th century (with floors and capitals which curiously bear figures of god Janus) and had the dome erected which with its diagonal buttresses looks like a St. Andrew's cross: unfortunately the lantern remained with the bare brick due to his death. The church has a single nave with side chapels (plus two smaller chapels) and is a triumph of the Baroque, full of light and art. One of the two chapels of the Transept was built by Vanvitelli and Valadier, two artists of exceptional value for the time and another modern architect (Piacentini) restored one of the chapels dedicated to the miracle of the Madonna in the 20th century. A miraculous medallion - which belonged to a Jew who fell to his knees after the apparition and converted - is preserved in the Church. A curiosity is that this minor basilica preserves the only putridarium in Rome: it is an underground chamber with a drain where the corpses were decomposed, the remains of which were then recomposed and buried by the monks in the ossuary. The adjacent cloister is also beautiful and preserves paintings from the 1600s that tell scenes from the life of S. Francesco de Paola. What is striking about the church is the richness of the frescoes and the brightness of the colours, even in the darkest sections. You cannot pass through here without going in to visit it, whether you go towards the Trevi Fountain or continue towards Piazza di Spagna.
