The palace is a must-visit landmark in Florence, symbolizing the power and patronage of the Medici family. It offers a profound experience of Renaissance and Baroque art and architecture. Originally commissioned in 1458 by the wealthy banker Luca Pitti, the palace became the main residence of the Medici family after Eleonora di Toledo, the wife of Cosimo I de' Medici, purchased it in 1549. Over the centuries, the palace was expanded multiple times. In the late 18th century, it served as a base of power for Napoleon, and following the unification of Italy, it became a royal residence for the House of Savoy. In 1919, King Victor Emmanuel III donated the palace and the Boboli Gardens to the Italian state, and it was opened to the public as a museum. Today, it stands as one of the largest museum complexes in Florence, offering visitors a rich journey through history, art, and royal legacy.

The palace and the paintings are well displayed. The gardens, not so much; in Spain we have much more beautiful gardens. Furthermore, they're uphill, so they're not accessible to everyone.

Beautiful, you really have to visit it, the royal gardens and rooms are also wonderful. Recommended
Far better than the Uffizi or the Academia. The art is much more varied interspersed with more history. However, there is a section labelled "modern art" this is all from the 19th century rather than the Renaissance. There are fewer visitors than the other two galleries mentioned and has the added bonus of having the Boboli gardens to escape to.

An unforgettable experience. A very well-kept museum, a world heritage site and run by competent people who love their work. A must-see if you are in Florence.
