Antica trattoria Del Riccio In Cantalupo nel sannio

Excellent quality food, simple but very friendly and warm atmosphere. The food is really good.

After two years we return to Riccio and it always gets better, from the typical Molise appetizer, sublime cured meats, star timbale and superior cavatelli, to finish with an excellent "grandma's" tiramisu.

We visited this small restaurant on August 14th. We were greeted, I presume, by the owner, who was very kind and helpful. He advised us on the menu choices, which turned out to be excellent. We recommend it.

I must confess two sins before starting my review: 1- we found ourselves there practically by chance 2- the outside wasn't the freshest looking That said, I'll try to be brief. On Sunday, August 9th, my wife, another couple of friends, and I, hungry as we were in Capitello Matese, began a frenetic search for somewhere to have lunch. NOTHING. EVERYWHERE. We called nearly fifteen restaurants before a loud voice immediately offered availability. We set off. Twenty minutes later, we were in Cantalupo del Sannio. From the outside, the restaurant could use a bit of a refresh, we must admit, but as soon as we stepped inside, we recognized the voice we'd heard on the phone in a Verace offerto who was welcoming us. His name was Antonio, but it didn't take long for him to cut us short and tell us to call him Uncle Tonino. And it was the most natural thing in the world, given how he treated us. Like old friends, but with the respect of hosting guests, he guided us, despite our (many) questions, to the menu that best suited us. A platter of excellent Molise cured meats and cheeses from small local producers, especially those personally cured by Uncle Tonino, stood out. Vegetables were grilled to perfection. We then each chose a different dish, eager to experiment. Hand-rolled tagliatelle with fresh (and plentiful) slivered truffles on top, no mushroom/truffle sauce or truffle oil. A timbale of tagliolini mixed with three cheeses baked and then served with a Molisan ragù (hand-sliced ​​pork/veal). Stewed cod with cherry tomatoes and olives. Cod with garlic, oil, and chili pepper. Salad and potatoes, strictly baked! Because Uncle Tonino doesn't fry anything except the cod, a personal choice of quality. Now we can sit here and talk in detail, but the only thing I can tell you (and I'm telling you this from four foodies who love good food, whether traditional or revisited): I've rarely eaten local products treated with such love and skill that they turn out to be masterpieces of deliciousness in their simplicity! This, ladies and gentlemen, in my opinion, is one of the last ORIGINAL places in their tradition, which are now becoming increasingly rare. Lastly, a sweet note: excellent tiramisu and apple pie like my grandmother used to make, if only I'd had a grandmother who knew how to make apple pie. Go visit Mr. Tonino at the Antica Trattoria del Riccio, even if you're a few kilometers away; he'll become your Uncle Tonino too, while you'll be licking your plates listening to his stories. Returning from Castelpetroso with a stop at Santa Lucia di Sassinoro, we enjoyed a half-day spent exploring the area's natural beauty.

Simplicity and good food. We'll definitely be back.

Today we had lunch at this restaurant and it was a wonderful and unforgettable experience. We ate traditional dishes, and while I was enjoying them, I closed my eyes and felt transported to eating at my parents' house...what a wonderful journey. Mr. Tonino was enchanting and delighted us with true and pure stories of our childhood in our time. Thank you for this wonderful trip and for the excellent food. We'll be back.
