AL Pompiere In Roma

This restaurant was recommended to us by our guest house host. It's unfortunate to read some of the reviews here, including from locals, on how this restaurant has apparently changed, but we really enjoyed our experience here, especially as we had given up for the night trying to find something good and authentic and available in nearby Trastevere. We started with the fried artichoke, which I thought could have been a bit more fried, but was still very good. We also had the battered cod, which was a surprisingly large portion, perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious. As a main we shared the chili chicken, with some roasted potatoes and a green salad, and this was also excellent. For dessert, the panna cotta — which is not my favourite to be honest — but this one I enjoyed, as it was fresh and firm and flavourful. We accompanied everything with a surprisingly inexpensive (€22) and perfectly acceptable bottle of Syrah, and some limoncello as a digestif. Service was smiling and attentive throughout and although the woman at the cash was somewhat 'businesslike' as others have mentioned, we didn't find this at all unusual or out of place for Rome, as that's her job after all, and it must be exhausting dealing with the endless tourists (like us). An older gentleman, who I assumed was the owner, was also present and was very pleasant and appreciative when we complimented him on our meal. So, while I naturally defer to the opinions of the locals, our own experience was very enjoyable, and in a quiet and relaxing location without the crowds and hassles of Trastevere. And for all of that, highly recommend.

Ate the most delicious Tagliononi al lemon here. A must!

Excellent restaurant serving typical Roman food, informal and friendly service, all the advice they gave me was spot on and excellent.

A very solid restaurant with typical cuisine. Everything is delicious and good, although I particularly enjoyed the daily special, "stuffed calamari."

I went there yesterday with my partner for my birthday. It was recommended by a colleague. I must say the welcome was very warm and the staff were always very kind and professional. We had an excellent artichoke alla giudia, two first courses, and two second courses. The only negative, and the reason I gave it 4 stars, was the tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms, which seemed to be undercooked. Otherwise, everything was excellent, including the desserts.

Wonderful location and architecture that respects the original features. Subpar food and service at exorbitant prices. The worst carbonara I've ever had, with practically raw pasta. The price of a bottle of water is truly exorbitant. As for wine, they don't have bulk wine, only bottles at very high prices.

A historic osteria that's now a restaurant. The space is quite spacious, and the tables offer just the right amount of privacy for a pleasant evening (or lunch). We were recommended this place for their fried food, but in hindsight, I would have ordered fewer fried foods and tried something else. The fried food was good; I tried fried brain (brain) for the first time (and discovered it wasn't exactly my thing). The artichoke alla giudia was very good. The zucchini flowers, fried ricotta, and lamb were also good... The broccoli wasn't as impressive, and you have to like brain to enjoy it (I assume). The homemade desserts are delicious; we especially ordered panna cotta and the ricotta and sour cherry tart.

The food was really good and very authentic! The atmosphere let the place down - maybe a bit of background music would help lift the place. Easy to find and very central. Not touristy at all.

Beautiful restaurant. Food was average. So many other restaurants in Rome that are better. Skip this one.
