I'll start by saying I love places that remain from the '80s, so I don't see this as a flaw. I stayed at Deglio Faraldi for 15 days and noticed a constant stream of people coming to the restaurant, but reading the reviews, I was hesitant to dine there one evening. So one evening, I took the opportunity to enter the restaurant under the pretext of a coffee. I waited at the counter, and a waiter asked me what I needed. I replied, "A coffee." He pointed to the owner and said, "You need to talk to him." I waited calmly at the bar until the owner decided to ask me what I needed. I calmly replied, "I'd like a coffee and a liqueur." He told me he didn't have time, and I replied that I had until tomorrow and would wait. He continued serving his customers, and since I had no intention of leaving, he sent a waiter and sat me down at a table on the outdoor patio, and all this for a coffee and a liqueur. I drink my coffee and sip my amaro, meanwhile the restaurant service is dwindling. The owner comes out for a cigarette and looks at me, makes a joke, I reciprocate and we start chatting about this and that. He takes me to see the pool in front of the atrium and we continue chatting. He tells me the story of the terraces, the dry stone walls, the wild boars, the wolves. We go back to the register and ask for the bill, but he offers me coffee and amaro instead! I return a few evenings later at the end of the evening with his wife and son to book a dinner with the intent and curiosity of what it would be like. We sit on the usual patio, order three slices of cake, a liter of water, a glass of wine, two coffees, and a amaro. Meanwhile, we remain just a few close friends and, in the midst of our chatter, I meet a friend of his who makes panissa. We exchange jokes and laugh, including the owner. I ask for the bill and hear the reply: "Forget it, you'll pay on the night of the dinner." The long-awaited dinner has arrived. I ate sooooooo well—appetizers, first courses, side dishes, desserts, wine, water, coffee, and the usual liqueurs—and paid the right price, not too much, not too little, just right! What's all this talk about? First, don't judge other people's work, especially if you don't have the skills. Second, you didn't like the food? De gustibus! Third, and without malice, if you're going to a restaurant and you're in a hurry, why not go to a fast food restaurant? I repeat, without malice, going to a restaurant is also about conviviality, but if you don't put yourself in the ideal conditions, it's difficult to fully exploit opportunities that would otherwise be missed. So, I sincerely thank DANILO, the owner, for the three wonderful evenings we spent almost involuntarily together. Thank you for the food. Thank you for sharing part of the history of the place you live in. I hope to return soon. I imagine some will think I'm a fool for doing it to entice a customer, but I reiterate that he wasn't obligated to do so, and even if he were, I see it as an added service and not a flaw. Service in a restaurant isn't just about organization, location, and speed, but also this. I conclude by saying, DANILO, continue as you always have. A hug from the GONDOLIER ❤️
