The best sushi I've ever tasted in Ecuador

Coming from the Amazon, we were craving some fresh sushi. But there was not really anything worthwhile in the old city center which encouraged us to seek further afield. And thank goodness we did!! Shibumi is a delight and surprise - in a sea of overly cheesed or cooked sushi around the world, Shobumi is a testament to the art of traditional sushi with a chefs twist and Ecuadorian influence. We tried one of the set menus and were blown away by the quality of the fish, the clean citrus flavors and variety. Coming from NYC and eating sushi at least once a week, this holds up among some of the best out there - highly recommend.

The experience was amazing; at the bar, the chef and owner suggests how to mix the rolls for the best possible flavor. Delicious.

The food didn't justify the price, neither in flavor nor quantity. I know what the concept is; the waiter made it crystal clear: "We don't use cream cheese here, and we don't make tempura" (I quote him). We found it a bit pretentious to start the presentation like that, but we accepted and let him guide us. Following his suggestion, we ordered for two: one sashimi, four nigiri, and two glasses of white wine. None of the flavors were memorable, and obviously, it was only three bites of food. It came to $25 per person. I wouldn't mind paying that much if the food or the experience were outstanding, but that wasn't the case here. I do appreciate the decor and architecture of the place; it's beautiful, with attention to every detail.
