The crypt of San Matteo is worth a visit alone! The remains of the medieval church are beautiful.

Very beautiful and evocative, the crypt is also beautiful and very particular, all frescoed.

The contrast between the appearance from the outside and the majesty inside is striking. It wasn't a place I'd checked out in advance, but I happened to be staying at a B&B across the street, so I decided to check it out and it was amazing. They sell tickets that combine three places, including an art gallery and a museum, but since I'm not particularly interested in religious art and can't read Italian, I think a single ticket for the Duomo would have been fine. The stone box (with lots of decorative carvings) in the courtyard/palace just inside the Duomo is apparently a coffin. I took a photo of my child next to it, unaware of this, and was told not to because it seemed bad luck. Of course it is. The basement is filled with marble walls and pillars decorated with kumiko latticework. In Japan, you sometimes see kumiko latticework made of wood, but here, similar pieces are made of marble, and it's fun to imagine how they were made. There was also a place where you could write the names of deceased family members and messages and post them in a mailbox. (I asked my mother-in-law, but she didn't know the details, such as whether someone was praying for them or if it was some kind of message to heaven.)

The cathedral is magnificent, and the crypt of St. Matthew is a masterpiece! The entrance fee is certainly there, but there are two offers, €7 and €10, but for this price you'll have access to two or all four nearby museums, which is a great value!

Beautiful cathedral, in a beautiful setting

A fascinating example of millennia of history that deserves to be included in a city tour. A single admission ticket (€10) allows you to visit two well-preserved historical sites and the diocesan museum. The cathedral's crypt is breathtaking for its rich decorations.
