Salerno's most important and iconic monument, dating back to 900 AD. A magnificent example of Romanesque architecture and an Arab-Norman bell tower. The interior was remodeled in Baroque style and in later centuries. The crypt, which houses the tomb of the apostle and evangelist Matthew, is enchanting.

The church is beautiful, both the upper section and the crypt, a true gem. It's often said that Salerno doesn't have much to see historically, but it's actually beautiful. The crypt is unique. I highly recommend it.

A superb cathedral that houses the body of the evangelist Matthew and the body of a pope in its crypt. That would be enough to make it worth a visit. In addition, the church and the crypt are splendidly painted. It is definitely worth the detour.

September 21, 2025, on the occasion of the feast of San Matteo, patron saint of the city of Salerno, there are so many emotions. I recommend visiting the cathedral crypt.
And on this feast day, there is the flower festival of the six saints, followed by the parade through the city streets, all very beautiful and characteristic.
N.B. There is no need to pay an entrance ticket.

The Duomo of Salerno is breathtaking in its mix of history and architecture. Built in the 11th century by the Normans, it holds the relics of Saint Matthew, one of the Apostles, making it an important pilgrimage site. The bronze doors are incredible, and the crypt beneath the main altar is richly decorated with mosaics and frescoes - one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. The atmosphere is quiet and reverent, but also very welcoming. A must-visit if you’re in Salerno, even if just for a short stroll through the historic center.
