It was a pleasure to eat at La Mangiatoia. There's a large indoor dining room and other more private spaces, bright and heated in the winter. The menu is varied and fresh, and, as is fitting, they let you know by word of mouth if a product isn't in season and therefore isn't available. The appetizers are excellent. We had excellent first courses; they even found a meat-free option for me, who doesn't eat meat. Courtesy, friendliness, and tradition are at home in this elegant restaurant in the historic center of the beautiful, ancient town of Bernalda.

I went there for lunch in mid-December, so reservations weren't necessary. My father likes to explore places before heading to eat. Located in the historic center, it's perfect after visiting the castle and the church of San Bernardino. You're greeted with a smile and a warm welcome, and from the first moment you step foot in, you know you won't be leaving hungry. In addition to the menu items, there are specials of the day, and as is tradition, the cover charge and house wine are included (along with coffee, biscotti, and amaro). I appreciated the fact that the owner/chef walked around the dining room twice, asking if everything was alright. Also noteworthy is the courtesy of the young woman who served us. The cod terrine, the porchetta, and the pasta with porcini mushrooms and crispy guanciale were all very popular.
