Excellent food in the surrounding areas. Recommended!!

Montevergine Abbey represents the heart and beginning of the journey: founded by William of Vercelli in 1124 (900 years ago), it is a place of faith, history, and art. The remains of the saint are kept beneath the high altar; the church houses a 13th-century Marian panel and an extraordinary series of works that recount centuries of spirituality and devotion. It is the point from which everything begins: every journey, both material and spiritual, takes shape here under the gaze of the Partenio mountains, among the beech forests that breathe silence and peace. At 1,263 meters above sea level, the abbey dominates the Sabato River valley. It can be reached on foot (from Mercogliano or Ospedaletto, via the Juta devotional path (coincides with the route of the Cammino di Guglielmo); a road suitable for vehicles, with numerous narrow passages, connects the abbey to the Avellino Ovest motorway exit, on the A3 Naples-Bari motorway. We recommend taking the beautiful funicular, built in 1926 and inaugurated in 1956; in just 1,670 meters of length, it covers a height difference of 734 meters, with an inclination between 43 and 63 degrees. It starts from the center of Mercogliano and in 7 minutes reaches the abbey among chestnut groves and limestone outcrops, with magnificent panoramic views of the valley and the Abbey of Loreto.

As a true Avellino, Montevergine is a place of the soul. It's painful to hear of the temporary interruption that prevents us from climbing as usual, because for us it's not just a sanctuary, but a refuge of peace and devotion. However, we remain hopeful that it will reopen as soon as possible, so we can once again experience that unique sense of home and spirituality.

Beautiful sanctuary, worth going there, and having lunch, and a nice walk.

I went to this place for lunch with the parish of Villanova di Guidonia, after a pilgrimage to the Madonna di Montevergine, we ate very well and everything was delicious fresh products I highly recommend it.
