A beautiful walk to the sanctuary

I had been there when I was a child and had been missing for a few years. The quiet air of the woods, the long climb to do by car or the walk to do on foot (only for real athletes) are worth the trip to this place. If you want, when it is in operation, you can use the funicular to get there. As soon as I arrived in the parking lot (quite expensive) I fell in love with this majestic complex again. It is usually beautiful but my visit was accompanied by a light drizzle and low clouds that enveloped everything down to the ground and created a truly unique atmosphere. So do not avoid going there if the weather seems uncertain to you. Maybe everything will seem even more beautiful. In addition to the splendid church, you will find small shops for shopping, accommodation facilities and you can easily have lunch. If in addition to the church you are interested in nature you can continue to Campo Maggiore: a plain on the upper part of the mountain. Excellent place for a picnic. I do not know if it is still accessible by car. In theory you could get to San Martino Valle Caudina from there ... But I don't know if I would risk it without a good 4x4 or a crawler (just kidding). Ps Avoid the busiest times during the holidays, coinciding with religious events and you will probably be able to experience the Sanctuary with due tranquility.

It is a very beautiful place, but the spirituality of the past has been replaced by excessive business. The guide, in charge of the museum, was very thorough, kind and helpful.

From the top of Mount Partenio, the sanctuary of Montevergine is the place of Marian worship that has always distinguished the territory of Avellino. We got there after walking the path that starts from Ospedaletto: it is about five kilometers long and lasts an hour. Among the rocks and the thick vegetation you come across the “sedia della Madonna”, a stone to which the legend of her arrival on the mountain is linked. The first nucleus of the church was built by San Guglielmo in the twelfth century, on the foundations of a pagan temple. The monumental complex is made up of the old church and the new basilica, the permanent exhibition of nativity scenes and the Abbey Museum, which preserves archaeological finds, sacred objects and vestments, and other works of art.
