In my opinion, this is the restaurant in Testaccio that best tells you about the epic times gone by when people lived in the shadow of the slaughterhouse.

Just recommended this place to a friend. It’s a bit out of the way but so worth the detour. Authentic in all its dimensions. Time stood still. Focus on the age old classics.

Both the food and wine we ordered were delicious, and the attitude was very calm and not overly friendly, which was great. Although it is far from the city center, I highly recommend it if you want to try authentic Roman food in a quiet place.

We stumbled across Checchino late on a Sunday evening, having no prior knowledge of it’s wealth of history. An utter delight. It is old school at its very best, knowledgeable and attentive. The wine list fabulous, the menu a refreshing change, descriptions were literally to the bone! Offal at its best - cured meats, pickles, traditional pasta and so much more. I wish we had arrived earlier in the evening, giving us time to choose more from the menu. I will be back when I next visit Rome for sure, (maybe tomorrow for lunch), before I fly back to less adventurous offal recipes in England! Thank you 🙏🏽

Ho mangiato divinamente e come me i miei compagni di cena : fagioli con le cotiche top - insalata di zampi buona - bucatini amatriciana molto buoni - rigatoni alla coda molto buoni - coda alla vaccinare molto buona - animelle e fegato molto buoni - cicoria ripassata molto buona . Locale accogliente con camino acceso

08/08/2025: The food was excellent and the service was top-notch! The only downside was the price range found in a guidebook... actually, you'd eat for €45 per person rather than €12... The carbonara was delicious, and the pasta with vongole was too 😋 Otherwise, we ate really well, and the portions, despite looking small, were just enough! 😀 Here are some photos to whet your appetite ;)
08/08/2025: The pasta was delicious and it was cooked well, but it was strong and sticky! I was shocked and thought maybe my food wasn't cooked. Even my friend's food was the same, and it wasn't fully cooked! The place has a great location, but it's not for eating at all. The service is good. It takes an hour for someone to come to you.

Al Grottino del Laziale

20/06/2025: A wonderful discovery! At the Dal Laziale restaurant you can immediately feel the authentic Roman atmosphere: warm welcome, impeccable service and lots of friendliness. The traditional dishes are truly excellent. Even the second courses and side dishes respect the true Roman LAZIALE cuisine generous portions I will definitely be back!
30/04/2025: I was down for work and we stopped there for two amatriciana pastas, a beef tail stew and some meatballs on my head full of bacon and I only had 6 measly pieces but in number, then I take the good meatballs even if in my opinion there was a bit more flavor but in the cold place they were cold, the place looks like a workshop cellar, a slight renovation could be in order
