28/05/2024: Etymology ignored
Often following the Quattro Ristoranti programme, we happened to see the episode dedicated to Gubbio: having long wanted to spend a weekend in Umbria and with our curiosity fueled by the cuisine of Gubbio, we decided to visit Gubbio and its restaurants.
Greeted by a breathtaking sunset under the Palazzo dei Consoli and a light drizzle, we take refuge in the Locanda del Duca.
Duca obviously derives from ducere, which in Latin means to command, to be in the lead.... well, after the weekend I would say that in our opinion this characteristic inherent in the name of the inn was strangely ignored during the program, easily deserving the first place.
Meanwhile, for having proposed a Greco Nero typical of the Todi area (which to differentiate it from the Calabrian one, a crasis is applied and is transformed into Grero), a fascinating vine both for the history linked to its rediscovery and revaluation, history of scientific research and stubbornness, but above all for a bouquet of spices and red fruits....absolutely to try.
The bruschetta as a starter is delicious and you begin to get intoxicated with truffles and earthy flavours.
The truffle umbricelli are truly remarkable and convince even non-fans of these nuggets that the Umbrian territory gives us. The meat ravioli with pears and walnuts are also excellent. The second courses are still up to par with a soft (low temperature cooking?) and tasty chicken fricco and a porchetta pork belly with onion and honey chestnuts which is striking for each of the flavors used by the chef.
If we really want to find some faults, the desserts are a step below compared to the rest of the menu: we found the trifle a little dry and the rosemary panna cotta on which perhaps I would dare a little more with the aromas.
Furthermore, the location in the center of Gubbio, overlooking the stream that cuts through the town, the kindness and professionalism of the staff, despite their young age, the honesty of the bill, make this restaurant an essential stop on a weekend in Gubbio.
26/05/2024: The price is a little exaggerated compared to the quantity, especially of the side dishes.
