In Roccalumera, a town that develops along the road that runs along the Ionian sea, between Messina and Taormina, there is a very interesting restaurant-tavern, almost from another era, small but welcoming and above all very colourful. Everything, from the outside and from the entrance door, with multicolored glass, is characterized by the joyful colorful liveliness that only Mediterranean, and Sicilian in particular, shades can give: from the furnishings to the walls - adorned with paintings, landscapes that above all smell of sea, sun and warmth - from ornaments to colorful ceramic plates. Furthermore, even the furnishings, often with bright colours, speak of Sicily, past and present, but also of nostalgia for a happy age - in particular, the "music room" which offers musical instruments to use but also musical memories of the 50s and 60s such as turntables, a rare Geloso recorder, records, radios etc. — and some exotic references to Mexico, with homages to the great painter Frida Kahlo. And all this is due to the nice and cultured landlady, Teresa; who is the artist responsible for all the works, paintings and so on, present in the rooms: he is keen to make it known, however, that the objects, artistically elaborated, are made with recycled material. The "landlady" serves at the tables and presents the dishes prepared by her partner, the only element of the "brigade that isn't there", who does everything in the kitchen with knowledge and skill. The dishes offered are those prepared with products from the surrounding area and therefore, first and foremost, those that the generous nearby sea offers daily, with some concessions to genuine products from the hinterland. As a rule, the meal is at a fixed price: it starts with a series of appetizers based on vegetables, including country vegetables and therefore "wild", olives and pickles, bruschetta, vegetable meatballs, omelette, "beccafico" sardines, salad octopus and mussels, fresh fish salad, potato gâteaux etc.; followed by a first course, in my case spaghetti with squid ink, and a second course which varies when necessary and seasonally based on what can be found; all accompanied by a decent basic local bulk wine and fresh homemade lemonade. What to say? all at a truly accessible cost, I would even say low for the offer of dishes all prepared as local tradition requires and requires. For a pleasant and different break from the usual; It's definitely worth it.
